Children of Responsibility: Latch Key

We have witnessed many times over the conditions and situations certain people are left to deal with in their life. However, the situation may vary when decision-making occurs but as discussed in a previous article on decision-making, there is a lot of thought process and time to be considered. The contributing factor will be based on the type of situation and the individual. Let’s look at some statistics on parents leaving children home unsupervised as an example. Parents leaving children home unsupervised is a common thing in America. Parents leaving children home unattended and supervising their sibling (s) may be a negative or positive. The percentage of parents leaving their children home unattended is 40 % and children who are left home alone are known as latch key children, which refers keys strung visible around their necks.

There are some of the pros and cons that latch keys may experience when coming of age. The cons are children growing up feeling abandon, distance relationships with parents, and underappreciated. Pros are independent, responsible, and having accountability. These pros and cons are characteristics of decision -making in the day and age of parents not affording child care and amongst other current situations in our economy.

Now, another point of view would be parents leaving children home unsupervised just to engage into extracurricular actives in other places rather than stay home with their children and support their psychological and sociological needs. Parents of this stature are commonly known as uninvolved parents. This will be for another topic to come.

Lastly, being a Generation X, I was a latch key growing up and the pros were responsibility and independents which carried over in my military career and allowed my career to take off expeditiously. Latch key are children with responsibility. What are your thoughts on Latch Keys?
